A
Killer Mansion
Robert Durst, the real estate heir recently
acquitted in a murder trial, has been considering
the purchase of a mansion in Galveston, Tex.,
near the site where his neighbor Morris Black
was killed in April 2002, according to the New
York Daily News. The mansion, which is said
to be haunted, has 35 rooms and was being shopped
around at $450,000 before Durst came in with
a bid near $390,000, which was rejected. Durst's
wife, Deborah Charatan, reportedly told owner
Norman Jones that they would make a decision
on the house after the trial, which ended earlier
this month.
Rumor has
it that the house is haunted, but according
to Dash Beardsley, who runs ghost tours of the
island, so is much of the town. The reason,
he says, is all the "unnecessary death"
that has taken place on the island over the
years. As for the mansion Durst is considering
buying, Beardsley says, "For years, people
have said they've heard or seen things there."

The
Austin Chronicle: Columns: Day Trips
Ghost stories about
Galveston should come as no surprise. One of
Texas' oldest seaports, the city has seen more
than its share of unfulfilled lives and unfortunate
deaths. The island was once a hideout for pirates,
nearly wiped off the map by a hurricane, and
was the epitome of rowdiness as thousands of
immigrants streamed off the ships.
"The
city has seen years of unnecessary sudden deaths,"
says Dash Beardsley, the creator, founder, and
premier guide of Ghost Tours of Galveston. "There
are lots of souls stuck in that vortex of time.
